Shining Cliff Gin maker unveils special winter releases

White Peak Distillery's Riverside Gin

The UK’s White Peak Distillery has launched two limited-edition gins to warm the cockles this winter.

The Derbyshire-based distiller says both the small-batch gins, made with local sourced botanicals, show off the “distinctive character” of its home region.

First up is White Peak’s Riverside Gin, distilled in partnership with the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, which has been brought back for a second run following the success of its first batch in 2019.

The gin is inspired by a desire – shared by White Peak co-founder Max Vaughan and members of the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust – to shine a light of nature in Derbyshire. It is made with botanicals that were hand-foraged from the trust’s nature reserves around the distillery.

As the name suggests, the gin is packed with riverside botanicals including meadowsweet, wood sorrel, water mint, and seeds from Himalayan balsam, an invasive species which the wildlife trust encourages people to pick each year to help protect the county’s riverbanks from erosion. White Peak says the balsam gives the gin a creamy note, which balances with the freshness of water mint and a citrus zing from lime peel.

Only 442 bottles of the single-batch Riverside Gin have been distilled, but there are plans to distil the recipe again next autumn. For each bottle sold, White Peak will donate £3 to the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.

Max Vaughan, founder of White Peak Distillery said: “Hand foraging the botanicals in our beautiful local area reminds us to appreciate the flavours that nature has to offer in our back yard. Riverside Gin is unique both in terms of how it was created and how it tastes.”

Secondly comes the spiced and barrel-aged Shining Cliff Winter Gin. It has been created by ageing its flagship Shining Cliff Gin into ex-Bourbon barrels, sourced from Heaven Hill in Kentucky, for around three months. White Peak says the time in the barrel gives the gin a spicy character and smoked wood flavours.

The Shining Cliff gin range is inspired by and named after the ancient woodland and hedgerows located behind the distillery, with a base recipe featuring 11 botanicals.

White Peak Riverside Gin and Shining Cliff Winter Gin (both 45% ABV) are available now at, priced at £33 for a 50cl bottle.
