To mark National Coffee Day (1 October), we’re celebrating a cocktail made with the caffeinated beverage that is beloved the world over: the Espresso Martini! It was created in the 1980s by London bartender Dick Bradsell, who reportedly mixed it for a customer who asked for a drink to “wake her up”.
Although traditionally made with vodka, the Espresso Martini is a great contender for a spirit swap to gin. Look for something classic and dry to balance with the sweetness of the coffee liqueur. A spice-forward gin such as Bathtub, or one with a coffee element (such as Sipsmith’s Sipspresso or Shetland Reel’s Coffee Bean), would help to give it an extra flavour kick.
