Cocktail of the week: Espresso Martini

Aviation Gin Espresso Martini

To mark National Coffee Day (1 October), we’re celebrating a cocktail made with the caffeinated beverage that is beloved the world over: the Espresso Martini! It was created in the 1980s by London bartender Dick Bradsell, who reportedly mixed it for a customer who asked for a drink to “wake her up”.

Although traditionally made with vodka, the Espresso Martini is a great contender for a spirit swap to gin. Look for something classic and dry to balance with the sweetness of the coffee liqueur. A spice-forward gin such as Bathtub, or one with a coffee element (such as Sipsmith’s Sipspresso or Shetland Reel’s Coffee Bean), would help to give it an extra flavour kick.

Espresso Martini

  • 45ml gin
  • 30ml fresh espresso
  • 15ml coffee liqueur
  • 10ml simple syrup
  • Coffee beans, to garnish

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the gin, espresso, liqueur and syrup. Shake well, then strain into a Martini glass. Garnish with the coffee beans.
