From the wilds of west Norfolk comes a gin paying homage to Boadicea (or Boudicca, depending on who you ask): the fiery British queen who fought back against Roman invaders.
Boadicea Gin is made by the Wild Knight Distillery, which was founded by husband and wife team Matt and Steph Brown. The couple, both big food and drink lovers, were inspired to start their distillery after a visit to Mongolia and seeing the centrality of vodka to the culture there.
Following the launch of their flagship product, the premium Wild Knight English vodka, in 2016, Boadicea Gin was unveiled in summer 2018 and the gin range now includes Classic, Spiced and Rosa expressions.
While their award-winning products are served in on-trade venues around the UK, Matt and Steph still have a strong connection to Norfolk and play an active part in championing its food and drink scene.
Time to see what our deputy editor made of Boadicea’s Spiced Gin.

Nose: Like Christmas pastries with a dollop of cream. A whack of winter spices: cinnamon, ginger, clove and nutmeg. Fruitiness from red berry and hints of toffee.
Palate: Lots more winter spices at the fore joined by plump cranberries, possibly soaked in brandy. Bitter orange marmalade. A suggestion of savoury, oaty biscuits.
Finish: Quite short. The fruit notes dissipate and leave behind softly whipped cream with cinnamon and nutmeg.
Comments: A warming, welcoming gin hug on a cold winter’s evening. Tonic brings out juicy fruit, but ginger ale or a dash of orange bitters could highlight the orange and spice notes.
